BAHAMAS
BARBADOS BARBADOS BARBADOS BARBADOS
BAHAMAS
The Bone fishing capital of the Caribbean with over 700 Islands. The area ‘breath’s Bones. The angler can experience hot sun, clear blue skies, and crystal waters that teem with exotic species all of which feed readily on fly presented by the fly fisherman. Bone fishing is the ultimate flats fish for speed and with good presentation the Bone will take and run for the horizon testing your skills to the limit. The anticipation and sight of these near invisible or ‘Ghost’ fish can set anyone’s heart pumping.

The guides in the area use skiffs and pole around the flats. At the end of the day let a few beers or margaritas slip down the throat and watch the sun go down in idyllic surroundings. A truly magnificent place for serious fishermen.

BRAZIL
BRAZIL BRAZIL BRAZIL
BRAZIL
Brazil continues to produce fantastic Billfishing with some amazing catches of Marlin and Sailfish. The Blue marlin are huge with 80% of them being in the 300 – 600lb range and many larger fish are caught every season. All of the billfish are tagged and released. Fishing takes place on the Royal Charlotte banks and the area has produced 2 ‘Granders’ in the last three seasons.

The season begins in September with October and November producing an average of 6 strikes a day and continues through to April, during the months of Jan, Feb and march the strike rate drops to an average of 3 fish per day but the fish are much bigger.

Our charter operation run two well equipped Sportsfisher’s out of Canavieras and clients are accommodated in a private deluxe guesthouse. Travelling to Brazil is now much easier than before as there are direct flights into Salvador from Miami and daily connections on to Ilheus where the lodge personell meet you and transport you to the guesthouse.

Other species available are Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo and Dorado.

CUBA / CAYO LARGO
CUBA CUBA CUBA CUBA
CUBA
Worldwide Fishing Safaris continues to source new destinations for Big Game and Saltfly fishing and have discovered a real gem in Cuba. In October 02 Peter Petzer and David Campbell fishing out of Hemingway’s Marina in Havana had some great Marlin action.

October is meant to be very late in the season but in one days fishing Pete and Dave raised 9 Marlin and had four hook-ups and tagged and released 2 Whites and a Blue on stand up gear.

The accommodation is very good with the hotel being just 50 meters from the Marina. The Boats were top class and were fitted with excellent equipment, the crews spoke good English and really worked hard, an added bonus was that we began fishing just 20 mins from the dock and we were amazed at how close we were to the beach when we hooked up at times no more than 500 meters away.

Cuba boasts many of the Pelagic species namely Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish, Dorado and Wahoo.

In June 2003 we took three teams of anglers that fished the World Famous Hemingway’s Competition comprising of some 45 boat teams. Our team of Peter Petzer David Campbell, Nick McCready and Frothy De Silva won the competition with another team of Ron Collins and Andrew Buchannon finishing third. An excellent result that left a few pained faces on some of the very experienced American and Caribbean Teams. We were fishing on the boats we Charter out of Hemingway’s Marina

CAYO LARGO CAYO LARGO CAYO LARGO CAYO LARGO

CAYO LARGO – Flyfish the Grand Slam. A 40min flight from Havana will take you to Cayo Largo which is home to some of the hottest Saltfly fishing in Cuba. The Casa Batida Fishing Club has the exclusive rights to 140 square miles of Marine Nature Reserve and the area is divided into sections and fished on a rotational basis daily by the six boats that are allowed to fish it.

Club Rules are that ALL HOOKS must be barbless and that all fish must be released.

There are a large variety of Fish species to target but the main ones are the Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon and Jack Crevalle, other species like Barracuda, Snapper, Grouper and Cubera are regulars around the area and are also worth a try.

Peak season is February to June when all the species are present, Migratory Tarpon of up to 80/100lbs (average) 15/30lbs are regularly spotted and casts to Permit are frequent. This period is the best to try for the Grand Slam and many are achieved in this period including the Super Grand Slam of Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit and Snook.

July to August is very hot but still provides productive fishing for Tarpon and Permit with Bonefish in the mornings and evenings.

December to Jan is the beginning of the season and there are plenty of Bonefish (especially big ones) on the Flats and the Mangrove areas, fishing for Tarpon and Permit can also be good to excellent, and anyway the weather there is far better than that of the UK at that time.

These flats and their wonderfully clear waters are home to and abundance of wildlife, fishing is mainly done from skiff’s and by wading, all the guides have excellent knowledge of the fishing grounds and all have basic skills in English. The average climate is warmer than the Bahamas with an average temp 23.6 C this goes up to 28.2 in August.

The season runs from December to August thus avoiding the Cyclones period from September to November.

The accommodation whilst on the Island is first class and also the Hotel on the overnight in Havana is of 5 Star quality.

GUATEMALA
GUATEMALA
FINEST SAILFISHING IN THE WORLD ON FLY OR CONVENTIONAL TACKLE.

Awesome is the word to use when talking or fishing this location as far as sailfish are concerned. For the Bait and the Fly angler this is the location is where your dreams of large pods of sails do actually come true.

Travel with us to the world-renowned ‘Fins’ n Feathers Inn on the Pacific Coast. Two previous anglers with WFS raised 184 Sails taking 146 Bites and releasing 104 fish tagged in two days.

This last season has produced some tremendous catches and once again anglers from England predominated in catch and release numbers. The fish average 60/70lb and on fly gear can really test the experienced angler. Imagine the fish crashing at the teasers, which are then snatched away, the fly is cast and then you watch as a dark shape rushes at your fly and engulfs it. A strike and the water erupts, The fish then makes a series of acrobatic leaps as it strips line off you at a rate of knots, the fight ensues and eventually you tag and release the fish to fight another day, truly memorable.

The 04/05 season figures are 7685 Billfish releases that include 2100 on the fly alone.

KENYA
Marlin Giant Trevally Sailfish Kenya
KENYA
One of our hottest fishing destinations, Kenya continues to produce some of the finest billfish fishing in the world. Kingfisher Big Game Charters out of Malindi and Hemingway’s out of Watamu give you the chance to achieve the FANTASY SLAM,

This feat was achieved in February of 2005 by Mark Allen’s boat ‘Simba’ when Broadbill, Black,Blue, Stripy Marlin and Sailfish were all caught in a 24hr period from his boat.

Species you can catch include Black, Blue& Striped Marlin. Broadbill Swordfish, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Giant Trevally, Wahoo, Dorado and Kingfish also frequent these waters. In the last few years there has been an explosion of Mantis Prawn which has kept large numbers of these fish in the area all year, and this year there has been also large numbers of Tiger and Bull Sharks with a world record for 80lb line being claimed for a 495lb Bull shark caught on 4th March 2002. Many people have hooked up with Tigers and some have been Tagged with many estimated at 1000lb and another in excess of 1,000 lb being lost at the boat before it could be tagged.

Stay at the All Inclusive Turtle Bay Beach Club, Tropical Village or the World Famous 5 Star Hemingway’s Hotel in Watamu. It is from the latter that we run our Sunset Billfish Classic Back to main index
MAURITIUS
Blue Marlin MAURITIUS
MAURITIUS
Set in the Indian Ocean off the East coast of Africa Mauritius has been a popular haunt of the big game angler for many years. Fleets run from in the North at Grand Bay, and to the South West at Black River and Le Morne, one of the few venues in the world that produces ‘grander’ Blue Marlin every season

Local captains whose wealth of knowledge reflects in their catches skipper the many top class strike craft. All of the pelagic species abound in these waters and include numerous species of shark.

Small groups of our anglers travel there every year and continue to record good catches from these waters. All the fleets have tackled up with 50lb to 130lb gear that is first class.

It is from Le Morne that we run our yearly competition The Sunset Billfish Challenge where we invite all anglers, Novices, Beginners, Ladies and Gentlemen to partake in this family orientated event.

MEXICO
MEXICO
Situated on the southern most tip of the Baja Peninsula lies Cabo San Lucas, the Striped Marlin Capital of the world, few venues can boast the sheer numbers of these fish that are tagged and released each season. The IGFA/Rolex World Championships were held there in May 2004 and 302 Striped Marlin were released over the 4 days that the tournament were fished. Striped Marlin can be caught year round with the peak months being April, May and June also November and December. During the months of August September, October and November the Blue and Black Marlin arrive in these waters giving anglers a chance to achieve the Billfish Grand Slam by releasing Blue, Black, Striped Marlin and Sailfish.

Apart from the Billfish, huge shoals of Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado migrate through these waters and the area also produces trophy Wahoo. One of the features of this fantastic venue is that no matter what the weather conditions you can fish the Sea of Cortez or off the Pacific Coast of the Baja Peninsula.

The Charter Boats are of a very high standard and fully equipped with excellent gear. Most of the Marlin are taken on live mackerel or goggle eyes but they can be hooked on lures as well.

The Hotel is first class and there are plenty of bars and restaurants dotted about the marina, the food and service is very good and the prices reasonable. It is a pleasure to be able to walk back to the hotel, at any time of night, without fear of being harassed, the locals appreciate the tourists and it is one of the safest venues I have fished.

MOZAMBIQUE
Mozambique
The summer months from October to March are the main Marlin time, with January and February being the top time. Sailfish are present during these months but they also appear off Bazaruto and Benguerra Islands in large numbers in July and August. Most general pelagic species are present year round. These include kingfish, giant trevally, queen mackerel and queenfish.

Surfcasting and fly fishing is consistent for most species such as giant trevally, ladyfish, bonefish, queenfish, pompano and barracuda as well as skates, rays and sharks, mostly blackfin being taken regularly. Bazaruto Lodge

The original BAZARUTO LODGE, situated at the northern end of the 35 km main island, was affected by a receint cyclone, they closed for three months to repair the damage and take the opportunity to upgrade. Accommodation is in thatched, en suite, A-frame bungalows just off the beach, and Bazaruto runs a fleet of twin-engined, seven-metre ski boats. For beach fishermen Baz Lodge is in the ideal position to fish the long sand spit at the northern point of the island, and also has beach vehicles to get anglers to the choice spots on the island’s long sea frontage. It is definitely the resort of choice for beach anglers. On the northern side of the same island, Benguerra Lodge

BENGUERRA LODGE is set in a growth of tall forest (rare in the islands) and overlooking the gap between Benguerra and Bazaruto islands. Benguerra Lodge has become known as the destination for the serious fly angler, with giant trevally and sailfish regularly taken. Deepwater bonefish have also been taken on fly, but they’re a rarity. Conventional game fishing and marlin fishing is also done from Benguerra. Voted “most friendly beach hideaway” in the 2002 Harpers & Queen travel awards, Benguerra Lodge consists of a low, open plan central lodge surrounded by lawn, with en suite chalets on raised platforms hidden amidst the surrounding greenery.

VANUATA
VANUATA
Recorded captures of Vanuatu Blue Marlin have ranged in size from as little as 40 pounds to an astronomical 1094 pounds, the biggest fish weighed in the island to date. This midget to monster diversity has led marine observers to increasingly speculate that this region may be one of the world's very few Blue Marlin spawning grounds. While it would be misleading to claim an average size for the Vanuatu blues, general observations have been made by skippers and crew accustomed to encountering the species. According to guide Dean Butler, in a run of fish averaging around 150-180 pounds, one in ten will be 400-600 pounds. At other times, he has seen the blues run at an average 300-500 pounds, with the odd fish among them weighing less than 200 pounds. Fish over 800 pounds can show up at any time.

Striped Marlin migrate sporadically through the Blue Marlin waters, spending days, sometimes weeks on the grounds. Most encountered are large, from 200 to 300 pounds. The Vanuatu record is 411 pounds. In recent times, Black Marlin to over 800 pounds have been released and there's a very real chance for bigger fish to be taken. Exciting captures are expected over the coming seasons as Kahuna Charters begins truly targeting this species, which has often been taken as an incidental capture.

SALT WATER FLY FISHING

For saltwater fly exponents, Vanuatu offers the best big game fly fishing action to be had anywhere in the world. All the fishery's game species can be targeted with a fly rod and Kahuna Charters' crews fully understand the special requirements for successful captures.

The Vanuatu fly fishing Grand Slam of Wahoo, Sailfish and Dogtooth tuna has already been achieved by our fly fishing clients, and the Royal Slam - which includes a Blue Marlin - is among the team's aims this season.
